The site was established in January 2004 to monitor the levels of air pollution in Newton Abbot Town Centre. The site is in a roadside location outside St Mary's Court Retirement Home and is also within the Newton Abbot Town Centre Air Quality Management Area that was declared in November 2005.
The air quality parameters currently measured at the site are oxides of nitrogen (NOX), nitric oxides (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). NOX is a mixture of NO and NO2 and is mainly emitted from combustion processes with road transport being the main source at this location. The monitoring equipment is housed within an air conditioned unit which operates continuously.
The analyser has been configured to carry out a daily automatic calibration between 00:00 and 01:00 hours. In addition, Teignbridge officers carry out routine fortnightly manual calibrations and the data is rescaled according to the calibration factors obtained. The real time data on this website is unratified so has not been scaled and the calibration data has not been removed. The station is also serviced and maintained twice yearly by Enviro Technology Services Ltd.
